Custom Scents

Let’s be honest. Nobody likes foul smells. Our body’s natural reaction is to turn around and walk away. We simply can’t help it. We just don’t want to be in bad smelling environment. The same holds true for people with poor body hygiene. Unfortunately this principle is also at play when you have unpleasant odour at the place of your business. It detracts people from coming in and you are loosing sales rapidly. It doesn’t matter whether you are a fitness center, a retail store or a hotel. The story is the same.

One of the best way how to tackle this issue is to use ambient scenting - a simple way how to infuse pleasant and odour busting aromas in the air. Not only it has the ability to get rid of unpleasant smells, but on top of it your place will distinctly stand out from the competition by having it’s own and unique custom scent. Your customers will feel better in your store without even knowing why ;-). That’s scent marketing at it’s finest.

Now, let’s get into the nuts and bolts how you can kick start your own scent marketing. The added benefit is – unpleasant odours no more! Let me share with you DIY strategies to get you started today:

  1. DIY air freshener

There are a lot of natural ways to eliminate bad smells but DIY air freshener is a favorite of many health enthusiasts. Not only it will make your home or business facility smelling fresh, but it can also sanitise entire environment. Here’s quick guide how to make your own air freshener:

Add 15-20 drops of your favorite essential oil to a spray bottle and then fill it with water. Mix them together by shaking the bottle well. Once done, spray it about 3-5 times into the air to eliminate bad odour and create a pleasant, fresh aroma.

  1. Remove carpet smell

Carpets have many little fibers. You can imagine it as a jungle with lot of trees and lianas. This is a perfect environment for the bad bacteria and molds to hide and produce foul odours. A lot of times the ventilation doesn’t do the trick. The way to fight them and win your carpet back is to add a few drops of essential oil into baking soda. Mix them together and sprinkle the solution onto the carpet. Then just put up your feet and relax for an hour. Afterwards just grab the nearest vacuum cleaner and get the job done. The direct result of your effort will be ‘as good as new’ smelling carpet.

If you don’t have baking soda, cornstarch will make a good substitute. And for those of you who are worried about changing the color of the carpet just apply the solution to a small area first and see how.

  1. Light bulb as a diffuser

As crazy as it may sound to some people, light bulbs can be used to diffuse essential oils. The reason is simple. They have surface that gets hot after a while. This is all we need. So the only thing you have to do is to use cotton ball or paper towel where you drip a few drops of your favorite essential oils and then you spread it over the light bulb. Switch it on and you have just turned it into an essential oils diffuser at zero cost.

  1. Use fragrance oils in an oil burner

A classic, time-proven and highly effective method in eliminating foul smells is to put fragrance or essential oils in oil burner. Just add a spoon of water and 5 – 10 drops of oil into the bowl and light a candle at the base. Of course you want to make sure that you place the burner outside the reach of children and people accidentally tripping it.
